Alvaro Espinoza is widely regarded as the foremost wine consultant in Chile, where he has been involved with many successful projects, including the introduction of biodynamic viticulture.
Over the years, Alvaro Espinoza has developed a winemaking philosophy, which is anchored in a strong belief in the potential of Chilean wines and their unique characteristics.
In addition to consulting, Alvaro Espinoza teaches Masters degree courses in Oenology at the School of Agricultural Sciences of Universidad de Chile and is also a regular speaker at the Catholic University of Santiago. He was the Director of the National Association of Agronomical/Oenological Engineers in Chile from 1993 to 1997.
Alvaro Espinoza has studied and worked in France, Chile, and the U.S. for almost 20 years. He holds degrees from the School of Agricultural Sciences of the Catholic University of Santiago and the Oenology Institute of Bordeaux University. He has also earned an Oenological/Agronomical Engineering Diploma and a National Diploma in Oenology from Chile and France respectively.
Alvaro owes his interest in wine to his father, a consulting enologist and professor at the Catholic University of Chile.
Since 2001, Alvaro has worked at Viñedos Emiliana to develop Viñedos Orgánicos Emiliana (VOE). VOE’s major focus is producing organic and biodynamic wines in the most prestigious wine regions of Chile: Casablanca, Maipo, and the Colchagua Valley. Today there are 283 hectares of vineyards organically certified and by the year 2007, 155 more will he added.
